Yes, it's true. Apple is currently in negotation over when to bring the iPhone to Japan. NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile phone provider, has confirmed speaking with Apple exectutives, including Steve Jobs. Apple has even said that the iPhone will be coming to Japan sometime in 2008. They have not released a date yet though.
Apparently, both companies have not yet agreed on how much of a cut Apple would receive. Hopefully they can find a compromise, or else NTT DoCoMo will be at a loss. They are already losing their customers to KDDI and Softbank, who are said to be stepping up their advertising and lowering prices. If for any reason a deal is not reached with NTT DoCoMo, Apple would most likely choose Softbank as a carrier instead.
